Which desert experience do you mean?
Agafay’s rocky hills and the dunes around Merzouga offer different landscapes. Choose the place before comparing camps or adding it to your route.
In this guide
Start with the landscape
Agafay, near Marrakech, is a landscape of rocky hills. Merzouga is associated with the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi and the Sahara in eastern Morocco. Those names describe different places, not two versions of the same outing. If dunes are the reason for your trip, begin with Merzouga research. If an open rocky landscape near your Marrakech base appeals, look at Agafay on its own terms.
Agafay: rocky hills near Marrakech
The Marrakech-Safi tourism council explicitly distinguishes Agafay’s rocky terrain from classic sand dunes. Its visitor listings include accommodation and activities, but a listing is not our endorsement. Separate the landscape from the package: would you enjoy the setting itself, or is the main attraction a meal, an activity or an overnight stay? Ask for the exact location and photographs of that property’s surroundings before choosing.
Merzouga: name the dunes and the overnight stop
The national tourism office places Merzouga in the Erg Chebbi landscape of dunes, palm groves and tracks. A package labelled “Merzouga” still needs a precise overnight location. Ask whether you will stay in accommodation in the village, beside the dunes or at another named site, and how you reach it from the main arrival point. A photograph of dunes does not establish the view from your room or tent.
Back to contentsRead the route as carefully as the camp description
Request a day-by-day route with each overnight stop and the start and end points of every transfer. Separate time in a vehicle, breaks, visits and the final approach to the accommodation. Then compare how much time the offer leaves at the landscape you came to see. This guide has not verified a journey duration or a complete desert itinerary; Merzouga is not a stop in our seven-day Marrakech-and-coast outline. Adding it means revising that route, not simply filling a spare afternoon.
Compare what the booking actually includes
For each offer, record the named accommodation, private or shared sleeping space, bathroom arrangements, meals, transfers and activities included in the quoted total. Ask which activities can be declined and what happens if the advertised schedule changes. For a family or anyone with particular access needs, describe the specific requirement and request an answer for that property and transfer. Keep those answers with the cancellation terms so similarly photographed packages can be compared on substance.
Choose the trip around the priority
If seeing sand dunes is essential, build your available nights around a researched Merzouga route before reserving the rest of Morocco. If it is an optional change of setting during a Marrakech stay, assess Agafay against the city time you would give up. Keeping the city-and-coast route as it stands is also a complete choice. The useful decision is which landscape and experience deserve your time, followed by an offer whose location and arrangements match that choice.
