Oujda

Medina gates, Dar Sebti and Gharnati music in Morocco’s northeast.

Overview: choose a city stay in the northeast
Oujda offers a different focus from the seaside stay often marketed alongside it at Saïdia. The city’s medina, gates and musical culture are reasons to spend time inland. Two nights make a useful planning allowance for an introduction, leaving one full day between arrival and departure. If you are visiting family, let those plans determine the length of the stay before fitting in sightseeing.
Experiences: begin with a named medina gate
The tourism office identifies Bab Sidi Abdelwahab on the eastern side of the medina and Bab Sidi al Gharbi to the west. Use a named gate as an orientation point when discussing a walk with your host or guide. Begin with one manageable outing and keep the return point clear. Pay attention to how the gateways connect the old quarter with the city around it, rather than trying to cover every lane.
Dar Sebti: architecture with a cultural purpose
The tourism office presents Sebti Palace, or Dar Sebti, as a cultural centre associated with music, painting and exhibitions. Its role gives you a reason to look beyond the exterior of a historic building. Ask what is on during your stay and whether visitors can attend. A programme or appointment can anchor a day; if nothing suits your dates, keep the medina outing as the main plan.
Back to contentsLocal context: listen for Gharnati
Oujda is associated with Gharnati, an Arabo-Andalusian musical tradition. The culture ministry’s announcement for its April 2026 festival included concerts, instrument-making displays and learning activities, showing that the tradition involves makers and transmission as well as performance. Treat that past programme as an introduction to what to ask about, not a calendar for your visit. Look for a current, named event before booking a stay around live music.
A pause away from the lanes
Lalla Aicha park is another place named by the national tourism office. It can give the day a different focus from gates and cultural buildings. Decide locally whether it fits your accommodation and the weather, and leave time for an ordinary meal or a return to a street you liked. A short city visit does not need an excursion added simply to fill the afternoon.
Getting there: compare the overnight sleeping options
ONCF describes single and double sleeping compartments and four-berth couchettes on the Casablanca–Oujda route. Compare the sleeping arrangement as well as the fare: ask which option is available for your date and whether the booking covers one berth or the whole compartment. Confirm it before removing a hotel night from your plan. Check the arrival station and time, then ask your accommodation about luggage storage or room access. If continuing to Saïdia, arrange that separate transfer around the confirmed arrival.
Back to contentsNext steps: let the northeast set the route
Choose Oujda because the city, its cultural interests or personal connections fit the trip. Start with a medina outing and investigate a Dar Sebti programme; add the coast only if you want time there. Check your onward connection before committing to the surrounding nights. A focused stay in the northeast can be more satisfying than inserting Oujda into a trip whose other stops are far to the west.
